In some parts of the world the nursery rhyme \"Mary, Mary,quite contrary, How does
your garden grow? With silver bells and cockle shells, And pretty maids all in a
row\" may well be many children\'s first introduction to the word \"silver\". Children
born into privileged backgrounds are said to have been \"born with a silver spoon\" in
their mouths. I would not describe my eldest son as having been born into a
privileged background but his father and I did buy him a kilo bar of silver to
celebrate his birth. We thought incorrectly that this would be a good investment. Of
course for investment purposes we should have bought gold.

Not so long ago it was de rigor as a godparent to give ones godchild a silver
christening mug. This custom seems to be in decline, whether on the ground of
expense, or that we have less inclination to look after objects which need polishing
I really don\'t know.

Silver jewelry has always had a place in my life. I can remember two of my earliest
bracelets - a hoop of silver with a pretty inscribed design on it and a special
sliding clasp to make it smaller or larger around a child\'s wrist. I also had a
silver chain hung with silver charms. This piece was always worn to parties.

My later teenage years were spent in Ghana, formerly the Gold Coast. There silver
jewelry counted for nothing. Silver does, however, have symbolic value. Chiefs are
associated with gold while Queen Mothers (who look after women\'s interests) are
associated with silver.

Some other areas of Africa do value silver jewelry. In North Africa there is an
ancient tradition of filigree jewelry. The Tauregs in Niger are famous for their
\"Taureg Crosses\" which recently became a western fashion accessory.

The Maria Theresa Taler was a universally trusted silver coin. There are nomadic
tribes in North and East Africa where these coins form part of necklaces and
headbands.

One very sad use of silver jewelry was represented for me by the silver dog collars
which a merchant in Bristol, England had made his slaves wear.

As a young adult I developed an allergic reaction to a pair of silver earrings which
must have been of poor quality. The result was an abscess near the carotid artery
and an emergency operation. After that I wore only gold jewelry.

A trip to Tasco in Mexico and a change in hair color altered that. I bought a
collection of earrings which remained unworn for many years. Then I changed my hair
color. Gold was no longer flattering to me. So I\'m back wearing silver and I\'m
always on the look out for beautiful pieces. Finally I have found a source of high
